With three world-class resorts, a lively après scene and signature events throughout the season, it's no wonder why Banff National Park is a hotspot for spring ski getaways.

Spring in Banff means snowy, sunny mountains, with the added benefit of warmer weather and longer days to enjoy in town. On-hill conditions stay strong through mid-May, but with the sun beating down, ice tends to disappear to make way for soft snow — perfect for easy turning and cushioned wipeouts.

Where to ski

So, where can you hit the slopes in Banff National Park?

A person downhill skiing through fresh powder at Sunshine Village.

Banff Sunshine Village: The iconic mountain is known globally for having one of the longest ski seasons in the country, often beginning in early November and running well into May. With its proximity to the town — only 20 minutes away by car — you can drive or take advantage of the free shuttle without ever sacrificing your sleep schedule.

Lake Louise Ski Resort: Boasting 170 named runs across five mountain faces, the variety at Lake Louise can’t be beat. While it's a little further than Sunshine — just under 40 minutes by car from downtown Banff — it's well worth the journey. Lake Louise’s spring season ends in early May, so the best sunny spring runs can be found in March and April.

Mt. Norquay Ski Resort: Banff’s closest ski area is just a 12-minute drive away, on the other side of the Trans-Canada highway from the townsite. This hill is a bit smaller, which makes it perfect for beginners. But don’t let the size fool you — the terrain is still exciting and spring skiing conditions abound into mid-April.

Spring Season Events

Pride Ski Day kicks off the spring season for the fourth year at Mt. Norquay on March 7. Enjoy evening skiing, s’mores and celebrating pride at the on-hill Lone Pine Restaurant.

Red Bull Jump & Freeze at Banff Sunshine on April 25 will see thrillseeking Canadians take on the ultimate winter showdown. Come watch 30 teams dress up in creative costumes and ride down the hill in self-crafted vehicle before attempting to soar and skim across a frigid cold pool.

Mt. Slushmore on April 25 is Lake Louise Ski Resort's spin on the end-of-season classic. Cheer on in-costume riders as they attempt to skim the pond in style.

Slush Cup returns on May 18 at Banff Sunshine. Send off the season as skiers and riders take on the challenge of skimming across a cold pool in front of a lively crowd.

Where to stay

If you’re looking for a classic alpine vibe, look no further than the Mount Royal Hotel. This historic stay is in the heart of downtown Banff, so you’re never far away from your next dining, shopping or nightlife experience. After hitting the slopes, store your equipment in the on-site ski storage and head to the hot tub lounge for a soak, paired well with a stop at the Cascade Lounge for a well-deserved après beverage.

Just down the road is the Elk + Avenue Hotel, a contemporary, upscale mountain accommodation. This modern lodge is perfect for relaxing after a long day on the mountain, all just a few steps from downtown Banff. Store your skis and boards in the full-size lockers to keep things tidy on your post-ski return, then start your après planning.

Where to après

There’s something about a post-ski drink that’s just a little better on the patio. Lake Louise, Banff Sunshine and Mt. Norquay all have fun-filled slopeside patio parties during the spring season that are hard to miss. Enjoy your après ski with music, drinks and some light snacks.

If you’re still feeling chilly, head into the warm and welcoming Brazen in Mount Royal Hotel and cozy up with a classic cocktail. Visit during happy hour for specials on drinks and food, on every day from 3 to 5 p.m., and toast to spring in the Canadian Rockies.
