Surrounded by six of Canada’s most stunning national parks, this gem of a mountain town is a dream destination for outdoor adventurers and nature lovers of all stripes. With breathtaking views and fast-flowing rivers, Golden is a perfect addition to any Canadian Rockies itinerary. Plus, it’s easy to reach if you’re travelling from east or west — by air or by car.
Golden has an airport, but it typically services charter flights only. This leaves Cranbrook as the closest airport (around 2.5 hours away by car), servicing domestic flights.
The nearest international airport is in Calgary. Once you land, you can easily rent a car and start the three-hour drive to Golden.
Tip: There are no car rental agencies in Golden. Most people bike, walk or drive their own vehicle here.
If you’re starting from the east, the drive will take about 3 hours (260 km or 161 miles) from Calgary. Just head west on Trans-Canada Highway 1.
As you leave Calgary, you’ll quickly see the Rocky Mountains in the distance. They get closer and closer as you drive, creating a sense of excitement and wonder.
Along the way, you’ll pass through the charming alpine community of Canmore before entering Banff National Park. You might want to take a break here to snap some photos or stretch your legs. If you do, you’ll need to purchase a pass at the gate or online.
Tip: Parking is limited in Banff during the high season, so if you do stop, be sure to account for the extra time.
After Banff, you’ll drive through Yoho National Park. This area is less crowded than Banff but arguably just as stunning. Watch waterfalls and thick forests as you continue your journey. When you get closer to Golden, you’ll be greeted with views of the surrounding mountains and the Kicking Horse River below.
The drive from Vancouver takes about 8 hours (around 700 km or 434 miles) via Highway 1 and Highway 5, also known as the Coquihalla Highway. As you leave Vancouver, you’ll travel through some of British Columbia’s most beautiful landscapes. The mountains, forests and the lakes along the way are spectacular.
About halfway through your trip, you’ll reach Kamloops. This is a great spot to spend the night if you want to break up the drive.
If time and weather allow, consider taking Highway 3 through the sunny Okanagan Valley. This route will add roughly two hours to your trip, but will allow you to explore Kelowna, Penticton and other communities along beautiful Lake Okanagan, where you can stop for a beach day. If wine tasting is more your style, this region’s many vineyards also have you covered.
You’ll reconnect with Highway 1 in Sicamous, where you’ll continue your journey to Golden.
From Kamloops, you’ll continue your drive on Highway 1 to Golden — about a 4-hour drive (350 km or 217 miles). The road is filled with opportunities to spot wildlife and take in the natural beauty. Depending on the season, you might also want to stop by Shuswap Lake for a quick visit before arriving in Golden.
Tip: Always stay alert while cruising through the mountains – roadside animal sightings are common. Remember that animals are most active at dusk.
